Volunteer with ROOTS

Help create a safe, welcoming space
for young adults each night.

Volunteers are essential to ROOTS. Each evening, our goal is to have one volunteer or staff member present for every three guests we serve. Volunteers support daily shelter operations while also building community and offering consistent, compassionate presence to young adults experiencing homelessness.
Whether serving a meal, helping set up our space, or simply sitting and talking with a guest, volunteers play a critical role in creating stability, dignity, and belonging.

Volunteer Shifts

ROOTS offers several in shelter volunteer shifts. Volunteers are encouraged to commit to a consistent weekly shift when possible to help provide stability and continuity for our guests.

Saturday Lunch
Program Shift

Saturdays late morning

Working at ROOTS means joining a small, committed team that believes relationships matter, harm reduction saves lives, and systems should bend toward people, not the other way around. Our staff bring curiosity, empathy, and a willingness to learn. We value lived experience, cultural humility, and a shared commitment to equity and justice.

At ROOTS Young Adult Shelter, our work is grounded in safety, dignity, and belonging. We support young adults ages 18 to 25 who are navigating homelessness, and we do so with compassion, consistency, and deep respect for each person’s autonomy.

If you are looking for meaningful work, a strong community, and an organization that cares about its people as much as its mission, we invite you to explore opportunities with ROOTS.

Upcoming Events

Hello ROOTS Community,

We have an important update to share about RISE UP 2026.

Over the past year, the ROOTS team has been working exceptionally hard as we continue one of the most significant remodels in our organization’s history. This work is transforming our space and creating a safer, more welcoming, and more supportive environment for the young adults who rely on ROOTS every night.

As we move into the next phase of construction, ROOTS will temporarily relocate our shelter operations beginning August 29.

Moving an entire shelter is no small undertaking, especially when our commitment from the beginning has been clear: we do not want to pause shelter operations. Our focus has been on making this transition while maintaining our services, supporting our staff, and most importantly, ensuring that every young adult who is counting on ROOTS continues to have a safe place to sleep and access the services and support they need.

With that in mind, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to move RISE UP 2026 to Thursday, November 5.

We know many of you have already saved the date, made plans to attend, sponsored the event, or supported us in bringing RISE UP together. We are incredibly grateful for your flexibility and understanding.

Moving RISE UP to November gives our team the time and capacity to focus fully on this transition and on making our temporary space safe, welcoming, accessible, and ready for our guests. It also means that when we come together for RISE UP, we will have even more to celebrate.

This has already been an extraordinary year for ROOTS. We have made tremendous progress on our remodel, expanded services and partnerships, navigated challenges, and continued showing up every single night for young adults experiencing homelessness. None of that happens without this community.

So please mark your calendars for Thursday, November 5, 2026. We cannot wait to gather with you, celebrate everything we have accomplished together, and share what is ahead for ROOTS.

Thank you for continuing to stand alongside ROOTS and, most importantly, alongside the young adults we serve.

Rise Up is ROOTS Annual Fundraising Event

For years, Rise Up has been the heart of ROOTS annual fundraising efforts. It is more than a single night. It is a gathering of community members who believe that young adults deserve safety, dignity, and belonging.

Each year, Rise Up brings together supporters, partners, and advocates to fuel the critical work happening every day at ROOTS Young Adult Shelter. The funds raised through Rise Up directly support overnight shelter, meals, case management, and the relationships that help young adults move toward stability and housing.
