ROOTS Young Adult Shelter Non-Discrimination
Policy & Commitment to Equity
At ROOTS Young Adult Shelter, we believe that every young person deserves access to safe shelter, compassionate support, and the opportunity to build a future free from homelessness. We are committed to fostering an inclusive, affirming, and equitable environment where all young adults—regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, or background—are treated with dignity and respect.
Our Commitment to Anti-Discrimination
ROOTS does not tolerate discrimination in any form. We provide services to all young adults (ages 18-25) experiencing homelessness, without exception. We affirm the right of every guest to access shelter and support free from:
- Racism and racial discrimination
- Transphobia, homophobia, and discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation
- Ableism and discrimination against those with disabilities or neurodivergence
- Religious discrimination
- Discrimination based on immigration status
- Any other form of systemic or interpersonal oppression
Understanding the Impact of Oppression & Structural Barriers
We recognize that homelessness is not experienced equally. Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), LGBTQIA+ young adults, young adults with disabilities, and those with histories of foster care or incarceration are disproportionately impacted by systemic inequities, discrimination, and exclusion from housing and economic opportunities.
As an organization, we actively work to address these inequities by:
- Providing identity-affirming services, including culturally competent and LGBTQIA+-inclusive care
- Partnering with BIPOC- and LGBTQIA+-led organizations to strengthen advocacy and resources
- Offering trauma-informed case management that understands the barriers our guests face
- Continuously educating our staff, volunteers, and leadership on issues of systemic racism, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination
A Safe & Affirming Space for Every Guest
ROOTS is committed to ensuring our shelter is a space where young people feel safe, seen, and supported. We enforce policies that protect our guests from harassment, discrimination, and harm. We expect staff, volunteers, and guests to uphold our values of inclusion and respect.
We know that housing justice is social justice. We will continue to challenge inequities, advocate for policies that uplift all young adults, and work toward a future where no young person has to experience homelessness.
